Hello, I have been gathering a list of professional euphoniums i believe would be good to try. The representative has to order all the euphoniums to bring in for me for next week and I was wonder ing
Is this list a good list to try? Is there something i should add to it? Is there something that I should remove because it doesnt even compare? Any comments on the models? Thanks for replies.......within a day would be nice
-Besson 967
-Willson 2900
-Yamaha YEP 642
-Miraphone 1258 (what are these like?)
Would a Besson 2051 be worth the extra about $1000? or no....
What are the Courtois 167 II's like?
Thanks

I think you will find someonbe who will tell you the horn they play is the best (why else would THEY play it), so go play many and let the horn speak to you. When I replaced my horn of twenty years a few years ago, I played a dozen different horns without looking at labels (or price tags). I narrowed the field down to three. The only things I had decided going in were that: I did not want a Yamaha - I did not want a 12" bell - the Besson, Willson, Miraphone were most likely choices. After the initial blind round I came up with... Yamaha, Hirshbrunner, and Sterling. I playe these three a lot more. I set up a double blind test (neither I nor my listening buddy knew which horn was which) and the Sterling - 12" bell - came out the clear winner. All of the pre-conceived notions I had proved to be wrong, for me. I bought the horn and really love the sound. There are some funky intonation things, but none of my conductors have noticed because you learn to use what you have (in music and life) and get the job done.
Go play - then decide.

The only reason Im asking for much is I actually have a limit to try THAT PARTICULAR day and place.............almost 3 hours away and I want the most contrasting, best selection i can get.......like i didnit want to try a Be 967 and 968 even though ones darker thant he other etc.........they are fairly similar. Anyway thanks alot.......im stickin with those four for now and...waiting for more suggestions

So what is the best technique to determining which model has the best intonation when youre all alone? A tuner is the only thing that comes to my mind.

I suspect you will have a wonderfully difficult time choosing a horn from those choices. Good luck!

Brian Bowman is God wrote:If you want a Yamaha, skip the 642 and get an 842 (that is if money is no object). Impressive horn...
I would say this is a generally true statement... For 95% of the horns out there. I play-tested a 642 recently over 3 days, and found it very impressive. I was at TMEA, and tried several several horns, including another 642 at another vendor... and this particular 642 played incredibly (for me). I want it over my 842 now...
