As an aspiring tubist in the Boston area, I have heard your name mentioned several times, especially by my teacher. You are most often associated with Proteus 7 (at least when I have heard about you). But, what exactly is Proteus 7? Thanks.

sorry slow to post - has been a crazy couple days

Proteus 7 is a blast to play in! The concept was to try to do something different then a brass quintet (not that any of us have anything against brass quintets) where we could really get a wide variety of sounds with a small group. Audiences have often remarked that we sound like a big band on one tune, a wind ensemble on another, brass quintet on another, etc. Between the small combinations in the group and the whole ensemble we have quite a range of colors to work with. We try to play some music that is familiar or by familiar composers (often with a different/quirky approach to arrangements) as well as more obscure works (or obscure works by well known composers), and we feature the music of our "in-house" composer, trumpeter Tony DiLorenzo (who writes really descriptive, characterfull, colorfull, melodic music). A typical concert has everything from Bach to Bernstein, Piazzola, screaming latin charts, you name it....

Best thing to do, after reading Matt's description, is get their recordings. I was floored after seeing them live, then picked up all the discs and listened to them for several days. Great use of voicings and the writing is fantastic.
