I believe Clifford Bevan himself just put an advertisement in the new ITEA Journal that talks about issues with people selling the book very overpriced. Piccolo Press is the publisher (correct me if I'm wrong) and the book is available directly from them.

I'd be happy to sell my first edition for $1000.

It is better in some ways than the second edition, because the images are printed better. The second edition's images are in some cases traced from photographs in the first edition. This is because the author did not apparently have access to the first edition materials any longer.

The second edition has been significantly updated, and it's currently available directly from the author's publishing house and perhaps a few other places, but not from the big distributors. For anyone interested only in the information it contains, the second edition is more useful.

Yeah, I bought mine in Germany about 25 years ago for DM75. I thought that was high. (75 marks was about $55 US.)

Some of the data in the book was outdated when it came out, but this is usually the case in survey books.

I think it's a great book. But a thousand bucks? I don't think so!

Try looking on www.amazon.co.uk rather than the USA site - it comes up with a much more sensible price. The best is bet is still probably direct from Cliff at :-

This is clearly high, but it is for the first edition, which is out of print. I have seen copies of this version sell for over $400 on eBay, and it's been a while since any were listed there.

The other advice about where to buy it from the publisher is for the second edition, which is what you probably want anyway if you want it as a reference. I should cost less than $100 including shipping from the UK.
