I have 3 trombonists who are interested in doing some section playing and I'm looking to make a collection of the excerpts. Does anyone have any recommendations either from audition lists or just pieces with juicy low brass parts? I can also talk other players into this so any parts with perhaps a tenor tuba, bass trumpet, 4th trombone, etc. would be welcome as well. They do not have to be public domain as the music library will allow us to take out parts for such an endeavour. Thanks for your help.

This would be a perfect time to purchase Gordon Cherry's excerpt cd's. They have complete low brass parts to almost any standard rep you'd want.

There is a lot of good stuff, especially the brass choirs, in the Bruckner symphonies.

Gliere 3rd Symphony/Ilya Mourometz. It has great chorales and also some great sections with big moving lines. Wagner's Tannhauser Overture is my favorite thing to do with a bunch of trombone players, though.

yea, anything bruckner, mahler, wagner, berlioz, tchaikovsky, and brahms 2 to keep the list going.

Why do people insist that Brahms 2 is such a great section piece. Compared to the other stuff listed here, its pretty tame.

I'll second the Mahler and Bruckner suggestions...Wagner and Berlioz can be fun too. Just get the Cherry CD, and look over the stuff yourself. It has all you need to have some low brass fun.
