Tuba Time

Okay...

So I've been having some childcare issues and I haven't been able to attend our normal band practices. In my spare time I picked a solo to keep my chops in good shape and over the past month I've worked out all the bugs. Today I asked our director if I could play the solo in the lobby of the auditorium as our guests arrive for the next show... (last month a sax quartet played the pre-show) He liked the idea and I sent him a recording of the solo and the sheet music for his review.

In his next email he asked if another tuba player could possibly play with me??? Not fully understanding his request, I replied by saying that I wanted to play this solo by myself and if he wanted a duet that I would search for one...

He replied back by saying; "We open the doors of the auditorium 30-45 minutes before our shows. If you and another tuba player could put together something before the concert that would be great. You can play your solo and the other person can play his solo, rotating back & forth. It's up to you, the time is all yours."

 Excuse me??? What did he just say???? The time is all yours???

Okay so I'm still in recovery mode! What a great opportunity and can we say "equal rights" for tuba players!!! Okay so maybe it is just the pre-show but tuba players rarely get any recognition! Now the real work begins!

The other tuba player is none other than Dave (bandmaster) Schaafsma... So here's your wakeup call Dave!!! :D

I've been out and about running errands all day and not online and look what miss!

Sounds like fun, but are we talking about the concert coming up on this Monday evening, March 13th? That doesn't leave us much time to get something together if we don't have the music already. What pieces did you have in mind? When do you want to rehearse? I haven't performed a public solo piece since I was in college, and that was a LONG time ago.... so this will be interesting.

 Once again, you guys make me laugh! As always, wearing a viking costume is never out of question!
mgilbert wrote:I only mention this because if the audience put up with a sax quartet, they'll be impressed by anything!
You can only imagine... Most of our audience is made up of old folks so it's true, we could probably do anything! Including dressing like vikings!

Update.......

The director emailed this morning and here's what he had to say:
GOOD MORNING TIM AND DAVID,

At breakfast this morning, I was telling Jane (his wife) about your solo and bass ensemble ideas. She thought it should appear on the stage as part of the major program. It's too good an idea to put it out in the lobby. Do you think that you guys can put together about an eight minute show featuring solos, ensembles, etc. etc.. You have two weeks to mature this idea. TALK TO ME...

Your Favorite Band Director, JACK
So now I'm searching for a recommended tuba piece for 4-6 tubas. Something that is melodic, somewhat easy and nice to listen to... Any suggestions???

Thanks, Tim
