Warren Deck/Chester Schmitz
Canadian Brass - Red, White and Brass. Triple brass quintet action (and then some) with NYPO and BSO players. Absolutely unreal tuba sound, all-around amazing brass playing...

Re: name your top rated tuba CDs
For the ability to entertain non-tuba players, my pick is the first Travelin' Light, by Sam Pilafian, on the Summit label.smurphius wrote:hello everyone. i've been wanting to expand my collection of music to listen to within the tuba family, and i thought i would post a string to find out this:

For the ability to evoke awe on the part of tuba players who admire technique, then Pat Sheridan is your man.
For sheer power, I've never heard anything top Roger Bobo's Gravity is Light Today (or is it Bobissimo? The one with the Hindemith, but either will do).
For romantic beauty and supreme musicianship, Floyd Cooley and the Romantic Tuba is my favorite.
I love all of Tuba Tracks by Gene Pokorny, but his unaccompanied Bach is perhaps the best display of technique serving music I've ever heard. I'd take in in a minute over any of the technique whizzes, and it stands up to everything ever recorded for tuba. When I hear it, I know that I will never know Bach.
For his F tuba sound that is a departure from the dark, darker, darkest trend these days, and for its ebullient character and evocative story-telling, Hans Nickel's Cantuballada is still one of my favorites. The Gregson recording on that CD is the definitive recording, in my view, and he makes a strong, strong case for playing the RVW as published.

An excellent guide for Orchestral Recordings is
Orchestral Recordings for Low Brass Players by Gerald Sloan. The author surveyed almost 100 musicians for recommended recordings, tallied the results, and annotated each one with pretty specific details. I used the most frequently cited ones as a good start for my orchestral library and was not dissapointed at all. It's only disadvantage is that the results are about ten years old........so if you're out the Mr. Sloan come out with a second edition! It's available through encore music www.encoremupb.com
Good luck
