Is that what you would choose to believe? You are certainly free to believe whatever you wish to believe.

There are plenty of good players... But teachers, I'm not aware of any... Where exactly are you located?

Goodluck!

Check out the colleges and universities in your area that have music departments. Most likely, they have web-sites listing the instrumental faculty and their contact info. Contact the individuals or the music department and determine their availability and willingness to take you as a student.

You might also try the local high school band directors and ask for recommendations.

Call Steve Ferguson at Hornguys. www.hornguys.com. He may be able to help you.

Without knowing more about your playing level or goals, that's about the best we can do here.

Why not ask him? He's a member of this BBS. (Hint: You'll find him under "Norm Pearson")

Thanks for your help, folks. Wish me luck.

To answer previous questions: I live in the Silver Lake area of L.A. (north of downtown, east of Hollywood, south of Glendale--not too far from Dodger Stadium). It takes me about 45 minutes to get to UCLA, even though it's in the same city. I work in Santa Monica, which is on the far side of UCLA from home.

I have e-mailed Jim Self (no response yet). I'll try Steve Ferguson, whom I've met, and Tommy Johnson and Norm Pearson, though, frankly, I could use someone on the more elementary/intermediate-friendly side than those last two.

Umm, Marty, who exactly is that available teacher you recommend?

Man, I saw her on the news this morning. TOTALLY unrepentent. Harsh words for the media, for the public in general, but not one WORD to indicate she's done anything wrong. And why not? This is one sociopathic child molester that won't be doin' any jail time!

Lock up your sons, everybody.

Actually I think she was charged for the crimes in two different counties. The news is that charges were dropped in one of those locations. I think she is still going to have to do some kind of time. She won't be teaching and she is doing 3 years house arrest. I think...

Anyway she is not available in LA to "teach" tuba as she will be spending some time in Florida for a while.

I'd like to give a plug to a So Cal tuba teacher and fellow TubeNetter Scott Sutherland. He's a good friend of mine now. Just click in his name under search and send him either a pm or e-mail.

Or you could contact ANY of us who hail from Southern California. We don't usually advertise for students because it's such a narrow market. Most of us could fit one or two more private students into our schedules.

I studied with Tommy Johnson as a high school sophomore without references. But you must call him on the telephone. At the time, Roger Bobo was still living in L.A. and he was also taking "unsponsored" students. I don't think it's a matter of reference, it's a matter of communication. And be ready to fork out major dollars for one lesson.
