Check out the colleges and universities in your area that have music departments. Most likely, they have web-sites listing the instrumental faculty and their contact info. Contact the individuals or the music department and determine their availability and willingness to take you as a student.

You might also try the local high school band directors and ask for recommendations.

Without knowing more about your playing level or goals, that's about the best we can do here.

To answer previous questions: I live in the Silver Lake area of L.A. (north of downtown, east of Hollywood, south of Glendale--not too far from Dodger Stadium). It takes me about 45 minutes to get to UCLA, even though it's in the same city. I work in Santa Monica, which is on the far side of UCLA from home.

I have e-mailed Jim Self (no response yet). I'll try Steve Ferguson, whom I've met, and Tommy Johnson and Norm Pearson, though, frankly, I could use someone on the more elementary/intermediate-friendly side than those last two.

Actually I think she was charged for the crimes in two different counties. The news is that charges were dropped in one of those locations. I think she is still going to have to do some kind of time. She won't be teaching and she is doing 3 years house arrest. I think...

Anyway she is not available in LA to "teach" tuba as she will be spending some time in Florida for a while.

I studied with Tommy Johnson as a high school sophomore without references. But you must call him on the telephone. At the time, Roger Bobo was still living in L.A. and he was also taking "unsponsored" students. I don't think it's a matter of reference, it's a matter of communication. And be ready to fork out major dollars for one lesson.
