I was perusing the Tower Records web site, and just saw a couple of interesting upcoming releases.

Neilsen Sym. No. 4, Martinon and Chicago Symphony, a classic performance which has been out of print forever - available March 28 (pre-order now for $11.99).

A box set Tribute to Zuben Mehta with 29 works, including 20 recordings by the LAPO and Roger Bobo (Zarathustra, Bruckner 8, Rite of Spring, Planets, to name a few). Also several performances with the Israel PO and the Vienna PO (available April 11 or pre-order now for around $37).

The web site doesn't specify, but I assume since the Mehta is a multi-disc box set, these are the complete performances, and not just highlights. Maybe Barry Guerrero can chime in if he knows.

It'd be a shame (and a little odd...) if there wasn't some NYP and Warren Deck in there too.

This is a Decca/London release.

Mehta recorded on Teldec (including a great Mahler 5) and Sony (excellent recordings of both the Planets and Sibelius 2nd are no longer in print) while in NY. There was also a really nice Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique with Sam Pilafian on 2nd tuba, but I don't remember the label.

That's a great recording, which incidentally has been available on CD in Japan for quite awhile....coupled with Martinon's "Altitudes". It's rather irritating that really fine historic performances are available "on the shelf" overseas and "out-of-print" at home!

Now.....if we could just get a reissue of Nielsen Symphony No. 2 "Four Temperaments" with Morton Gould directing Chicago. I think Jay Friedman called that recording the most exciting made during his years with the CSO (see JFs site).

It's on this disc, along with the Martinon recording of the Helios Overture and one other work, Mother, Op. 41, The Fog is Lifting, featuring James Galway.

I'm surprised to hear that Sibelius #2 with New york/Mehta is out of print. We just played that this week (which is really cool), and I was listening to that particular recording for my inspiration. HE is so amazing! Guess I'll have to take extra care of it now!

The out-of-print Symphonie Fantastique with New York/Mehta where Pilafian is on 2nd is on the DECCA label. It has a solid orange front cover with a picture of Mehta (very young looking!) on it. Got it from ebay a few years ago before I knew that Pilafian was on it as well, and only spent about $10 on it! When I first heard the Dies Irae, I was shocked!!!
