Pronunciation of Kije

Post by Mark »

How do you pronounce Kije, as in Lt. Kije?

No wait, I know TubeNet too well. Let me rephrase that questions.

What is the correct, American-English pronunciation of Kije?

I say:

Key-J

but I've also heard:

Key-G

But, I don't think it really matters.

Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

For those of you who don't read Cyrillic letters, it says, "KEY-zhay."

Mike's the closest, I think.

ki-ZHEH

Accent on the second syllable; "eh" not the heavily-stressed-almost-two-syllable English "a" as in "may", but more like the "e" in "let. "Zh" is like the "s" in "measure", but a little stronger. "I' not quite an "ee", but a little shorter, like the "i" in "thing".

Mike's version will be fine, as long as you move the stress to the second syllable. In fact, the name's often written with Roman characters as "Kijé" to show the stress.

Now, how does one pronouce "Podporuchik"? (The "lieutenant" part)? :)

I believe that's Raymond Luxury Yacht (as in Yatched).

Karl "who was in high school in Dallas when Monty Python first appeared on US television-PBS station KERA."

You are a very silly man, and I'm not going to interview you.
