I don't know about tuba/education, but Colorado in Boulder had a somewhat legendary voice pedagogy department.
...Isn't Warren Deck teaching in Denver?

If you haven't done this already, have your son schedule take a lesson with the instructor he would be working with. Let him see how he interacts with them and whether it seems to be a good fit.
Whether they have graduate programs should not be too much of a concern, since many students switch schools for graduate work to get the influence of another teacher, among other benefits.

Charles, I'm a student at Concordia University, in Seward NE (a rival of Hastings
). Hastings College has excellent music professors. Their undergraduate and graduate music programs are a darn good. The low brass teacher is a great player. Hastings is also one of the best liberal art colleges in the state. Finally Lincoln and Omaha are pretty close to Hastings. So he'll access to UNL, UNO and be able to hear the LSO, OSO, and other great ensembles. Hope this helps and good luck with your descions!

I think it's good if your son can study with a tuba player and not someone who plays a different instrument primarily. I went to a small college but was able to study with a world class tuba player. The teacher at school was a trumpet player and I studied with him during my senior year but I was glad I got to study with a real tuba player.

Re: MUSIC COLLEGES
The comment about meeting the teachers is good advice. When our daughter was deciding on colleges she applied to and was accepted into 5 schools. She was certain that one of them was the one she wanted to attend. She narrowed her choices down to 3 and then scheduled a day at each school, including at sitting in on at least one real class with one of the key professors in the department in which she would be studying. After this she changed her mind and decided to attend the one that she had originally put third. She went there, graduated in 2004 and was very happy with her choice.tubawaldo1 wrote:I have a tough question. My son is a senior in high school and is planning on going to college and getting a degree in Music, Performance. He is also planing on taking classes in Music education.
Here is our problem; He has applied to 3 colleges, and has been accepted at all three. The colleges are HASTINGS COLLEGE (NEBRASKA), CSU PUEBLO (COLORADO), AND THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN COLORADO "UNC"(COLORADO). HASTINGS AND UNC BOTH HAVE GRADUATE PROGRAMS FOR MUSIC, CSU PUEBLO DOES NOT. Hastings College is a private and has offered him several scholarships. CSU Pueblo and UNC have not and are both state schools, and we are Colorado residents. The scholarships and instate rates make all three schools about the same amount, $11,500 Hastings, $11,800 UNC, and $14,000 for CSU Pueblo. So the big question is this, DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THESE SCHOOLS. PRO'S AND CON'S.
Please let me know what you know

Everyone's feedback is about all you will get, go get a private lesson or at least visit them. (unless you talk to someone whos been there)
I am a Sophomore in Highschool and have similar plans, I have pretty much only one University in my mind right now, but I don't know where else to go as there is not a WHOLE lot in Canada (yes i know we have a few lol)........but err I really want to go to the one nearest to me as it is the 2nd best in Canada and I know people who have gone there, and I also haven't heard barely ANYTHING from the other colleges/universities.
