My local middle-school band director asked me about EASY tuba duets. He's actually got THREE tuba players....but thought that asking for trios would be greedy.

I searched...but came up empty.

Any suggestions?

I don't know if it's still in print, but there used to be a Belwin/Warner Bros series of books called "Classical (Duets, Trios, Quartets) For All" by William Ryden. Basically, you buy books for whatever combination of instruments you have. The Bass Clef book covers Trombone, Baritone, Bassoon and Tuba. It's worth a look.

Sears duets for bass trb/tuba comes to my mind. Quite a few of those are "easy" (lacking tons of accidentals, few notes with any amount of "flag-thingies" on their necks). 1st parts may be high enough for tubists. These are great to team up tubas with baritones.
Trios:
Tommy Peterson (I think) "ten trios for trombone", not overly challenging either and REAL fun to play. Again, take it down as necessary.
There must be tons of trios for recorders that wayt to be transcribed to bass clef.

Find some easy trombone duets (they shouldn't be difficult to find) and play them down the octave. Some will work, some won't.

I highly recommend the Walter Sear duets. The volume one book is farely easy and is very nice to listen to & play. It includes variety of catchy etudes in different styles of music..... it's really a great tuba duet book to get started on!

The Herbert Wekselblatt book "First solos for the tuba player" has 6 duets at the back. It's a good book for getting young players in front of an audience for the first time (certainly helped me).

I like the Sear duets, but for young kids, they will not be easy.

Interestingly, the duets in the First Solos book are the hardest pieces in the book. But, they are still fairly easy.

There is an entire series of Duets for All and Trios for All (classical, Christmas, jazz, pop, sacred), that contain a mix of easy to moderate works. I'd try these first. I think they are published by Warner Bros.

Two possibilities:

Festival Ensembles (Standard of Excellence) by Bruce Pearson & Chuck Elledge.

Fun Play Along Duets for Tuba, by Patrick Sheridan. This might be too hard for some students, but it has a lot of good variety that the students can shoot for.

I don't have the titles, but I think that Shawn Green (University of Northern Iowa) and Beautidel Press has some Jazz Duets at a slightly more advanced level. http://beautideljazz.com/

I use Pat Sheridan's "Fun Play Along Duets" with a student I work with who has been playing for about a year and a half. Some of the pieces are challenging for his level of playing, but he loves working on them. The best thing about this book is that it comes with a CD of Pat Sheridan playing each part of each track seperately, so my student can play one part of the duet with Pat playing the other. (Or play his part along with Pat)

The CD that comes with the book is also great for establishing a good overall concept of what a tuba "should" sound like and playing along with it really helps with tuning as well.

The most fun tuba duet book I ever played from is Roger Jones's 21 Distinctive Duets for Tubas, published by the University of Miami (Sam Fox). I think it's been long out of print. Nothing in this book is difficult at all.
