I have heard the recording that Bloke is talking about. Bloke did a great job, but I don't think atrocious even comes close to how the orchestra sounded.

I believe Tony played the John Williams at the last tuba conf. Or maybe I am mistaken. Listen to the archive above and tell me if it is not there.

He played it just a bit better with the Honolulu Symphony.
The recording quality and most likely playback for most of us does not do him justice. I was there to hear him play it that day and he did his usual standup job.

Tony is one (I firmly believe) who could work anywhere he wanted to work.
This seems like quite a statement with the audition procedure being such a wildcard (oboists, drummers, conductors, etc.), but I make it, because I simply cannot conceive of a committee that would reject Tony's artistry.
I agree that Tony is an incredible tuba player and artist who could make even the best orchestra in the world even better. However, in light of recent auditions, there are actual committees who rejected his artistry, or preferred someone else's artistry over his. It may be hard to conceive, but it happens.

In addition to Philly (see below) I heard from a very reliable source that he was at the first Cleveland audition (summer/2005).

Mr. Bishop played it on a Mirafone 184-5U. Technically, it's a contrabass tuba, but I don't think it qualifies as a "big horn."
