I'm doing some research on the Ewald Brass Quintets (esp No.1) and I am having a heck of a time finding any information. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

Here are acouple of places to start:
International Trumpet Guild: Smith, André M. Anne Hardin
The History of the Four Quintets for Brass by Victor Ewald May94/4
A nice history, although I don't agree with all of the findings in the article. I firmly believe Ewald only wrote 3 quintets specifically for Brass and the so called fourth was actually for String Quartet. It was written before Quintet No. in Bb minor.

Find some recordings and they will have a little info on the piece. Not much! Most albums have the same info. You may find yourself talking more about Ewald himself than the actual Quintet. There is not too much info that I have found on Ewald himself, but there is some out there!
_____
If you happen to be in the DC area, the Library of COngress does have the original publication of Ewald 1. I do not believe there were any program notes, but it is kind of cool!
Good luck,

The Stockholm recording is very good. Another you might want to consider if you can find it is by the Baltic Brass:

Amazon states that it is out of print, but you might be able to find it somewhere else. The recording is done on original instruments or put another way instruments of the turn into the 20th century. The playing is extremely well done. Delicate and musical! I would highly recommend this recording.
I will dig out th Cd and see if there is anything that might be of use!
