Good morning,

I found some live recordings at the station of George Szell conducting the Concertgebouw Orchestra from 1964-1966. Included on the recordings are the Faust Overture/Wagner, Don Quixotte/Strauss, and the Dvorak Cello Concerto.

Although these recordings are mono, the tuba playing is VERY NICE. I seem to remember an article concerning Mr. Bobo's tenure with this orchestra, but can't remember the dates he was there. Also, Did Ms. Weldon suceed him when he went to the LA Phil? Whoever the tuba player is, there is some great music making going on.

Thanks in advance for any info. Sorry, I have no access to any of the old TUBA/ITEA Journals.

Connie Weldon was in the Concertgebouw Orchestra before Roger Bobo. Next time that I talk with her I will try to remember to ask about recordings, although she never mentioned any to me.

Dennis,
I also have a great live recording of Concertgebouw/Szell from 1960. A really good Dvorak 8 with some wonderful brass playing. I remember an article about Ms. Weldon and her time in the Concertgebouw in the TUBA Journal, may be she could shed some light.

The original recordings I cited in my first post were made in 1964-66, so I assume from the replies, it was after either of these players were there.

Donald Blakeslee was the tubist with the KCO from 1964 (succeeding Bobo) until just recently. For those who did not know him, he was born in 1940 in New Haven Connecticut. His stuidies were at the Ohio State University, the Curtis School of Music, and Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Berlin.

He passed away earlier this year.

Thanks, David. He played REALLY well on these recordings, particularly the opening to the Faust Overture. I remember fondly his work on the Haitink Bruckner and Shostakovich recordings, he played great on those as well. What a sound. If I am not mistaken from the one time I met him with the Netherlands Wind Ensemble, he played a huge Alex BBb for most of the low stuff. Can you shed any more light on his tenure in the orchestra and his equipment?
