I counteract this problem by taking a slug of beer between tunes-sometimes alternating with ice water.

Seriously, keep cool, not cold water with you. Most prescription medications now have their own website, so you can find more information about it, and how to deal with side effects, that way. And on your next follow-up with your physician, ask him about keeping everything lubricated, and if he doesn't have answers that help, make him get you some info or a referral to someone or something that does.
As an example, my son is on Strattera, but had trouble swallowing the capsule. Only after my wife and I researched the medicine on its website and found it came in a lower dose with a much smaller capsule were we able to talk intellegently to his doctor about it, to the result he can take two of the small ones instead of one of the large ones, and medicine taking is a lot easier now. Easier taking means more regular taking, which means he is more regulated now.
Hang in there! Good luck!

A bit of lemon juice in cool water will stimulate the saliva glands as the sour taste buds are stimulated. Too much is just harsh, and the acid can actually irritate the throat. Same way with honey. A bit will help stimulate the saliva glands as the fructose glides over and stimulates the sweet taste buds on your tongue, but too much, well, same as when you let it drip on your fingers and try to get it off.

Cool or warm water is the only way to fight dehydration. Take it from a guy who was dehydrated so bad, at one time, one kidney was shut off and I nearly died. Alcohol seems like it will satisfy your thirst, but it won't. Caffeinated drinks should be avoided if you really feel parched--stay away from sugary drinks or milk, too. (Milk can actually gag you if you are in dire thirst!)

Lemon juice works, or at least it works for me.

I am going to be on a certain medication for the rest of my life...the bottle said that a side effect was dry throat, and it wasn't kidding.

if it were I....I'd so some really serious googling of my condition and see if there wasn't an alternative medicine treatment (read: non-prescription) that would do as good or better job as the prescription you're taking. You would have to be willing to venture into NMD, ND, and other medical modalities outside of MD-ism. Since you didn't mention the malady, I have no idea whether such an alternative solution exists, but I've been amazed what I've been able to find for myself that keeps my medicine cabinet nearly free of prescriptions.
