Amazing Shostakovich 10th!

Post by tubapress »

Shostakovich - Symphony No. 10/Ballet Suite No. 4 - Neeme Jarvi conducting Scottish National Orchestra

This is not a new recording (from 1988), but I just listened to it again and I'm always just floored by it. The brass playing is astounding! Although some may debate, I think this may eb the finest available recording of this work (I like it much more than the Karajan/BPO recording). The 2nd movement is sheer terror captured in music!

Check it out at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/ ... HN/tubenet

I've not heard the Karajan or the Jarvi recording, but I definitely enjoy the London/Previn recording of Shost. 10. Have you heard that one and can you compare the two?

I can't say that I have heard the Previn/LSO recording. Although I am not a Previn fan in general, it seems that the London Orchestras really respond to him (check out the RPO's VW 2nd Symphony with him). My guess is that the playing is probably fantastic and that while there may be a lot of intensity the killer instinct that makes this music go is probably missing.

That's my $.02.

Both the Jarvi and Karajan recordings are recommended in Ted Libby's NPR Guide, while Penguin lists the Karajan as one of their "Key" recordings. Based on that recommendation, I recently purchased the Karajan, and was extremely happy with the recording.

The Previn is probably my next purchase, since it appears to have been recorded prior to the passing of Mr. Fletcher. I have always been a big fan of his, and with the coupling of the 13th Symphony on a 2-CD set at midprice, it is also a bargain.
