So, this will all be opinion, but I wanna know what ya'll think out there in TubeNet land. And please, limit the conversation to the topic. I know we all have moments where we see things and cannot help but point them out. However, I am really trying to get as many opinions as possible on these 2(3) horns. Ya'lls help is very much appreciated.

The Miraphone 1291 outperformed every horn at wwbw for me both times I played it before I bought it.

However, the guy I will be studying under next year swears by the perantucci line of tubas. I really dont think you can go wrong either way.

The problem is that it is very difficult to get those two type of horns side-by-side for a comparison. This is what really bugs me about the Custom Music monopoly on B&S and Hirsbrunner.

You can go down to Custom Music to try the 606, but they won't have a Miraphone 1291 there for you to try. Same goes with WWBW, no 606.

What I'd suggest you do is go to WWBW first and take a Miraphone 1291 on a "trial period." Then, go down to Custom Music in Detroit (really not that far away from each other) and have a side-by-side comparison.

I would assume these horns sound very different and would be difficult to compare. Miraphone tubas tend to have a "German" sound while the PT-606p tends to have an "American" yorkie sound (although they are produced in Germany, right?). I could be off-base here.

I've tried to 606 and boy do I love it. Fell in love right away. The sound is so interesting, very flexible. It seems to be able to do "whatever you want it to do." The Hirsbrunners sounded real good too, but there was less colour in the sound, kinda dull. Never tried the Miraphone 1291, but I've played the Miraphone 188, from what I've heard they are very different horns.

One difference is the price. The Miraphone 1291 sells for about 7K at WWBW while the 606 sells for probably around 11-12K at Custom Music. You can find used Miraphone 1291's, but you won't be able to find used 606's just yet.

Miraphone and Custom Music both had booths at this past December's Midwest Clinic. I tried both Miraphones back to back, as well as various PTs (including the 606).

The 606 was my favorite horn of the clinic - or at least it fit my needs the best. But it's tough to tell in a convention center with 100 other people trying out horns all around you ...

The Miraphones were definitely not shabby either - they came in a close second - but I went with the 606. Whatever that's worth.

I would suggest that you search "606" and "1291" on tubenet. These two tubas have been discussed much. But if an opinion is what you are after, here's one: 606 with a bullet.
