I'm not sure that Fred Marzan's motives in the "carpal tunnel horns" were strictly for the top-mounted tuning slide (it seems reasonable, but alas, he's no longer around to ask), but the design also results in a much shorter leadpipe.
Short leadpipes tend to enable crisper slurs (at least that's my experience). But it's a tricky balancing act, as intonation can be severely affected.
Joe, I'm convinced that the Marzan CC's are inferior in intonation because the design of these things is based on the BBb version with the excess 2 feet of length removed from the tapered section immediately after the valves, instead of farther downstream from them.

FWIW, those old rotary Marzans had an incredible sound and were very agile to get around on for a decent sized horn. Having played both the piston and rotary, I think the rotary is the better horn. If I had the extra $$$ I wouldn't mind having one, but would probably get the BBb for intonation reasons. They have a York ish sound and a very powerful low register, perhaps because of the short leadpipe??????????
