I have heard on this board that the 1292 plays has a more "focused" sound than the 1291 and that the "slots" are narrower, perhaps making intonation easier. I also read the the new smaller leadpipe on the 1292 may inhibit the low register. I have three questions: (1) Does anyone have a lot of playing time on both tubas and would be willing to render an informed opinion about the differences? (2) Is it possible to purchase a "1292" leadpipe? (3) If so, how much?

I have tested a lot of 1291s and my personal horn has the 1292 leadpipe on it. The sound is more focused and the response is quicker since the standard leadpipe is nickel silver and the 1292 pipe is just yellow brass, so there is a difference. As to inhibiting the low register - no. The slots are about the same, maybe a tad smaller, but there is a difference in performance.

I have these leadpipes in stock - I believe I have one silver plated one and two raw brass ones left in stock.
