OK,
So I recently posted aquestion about the Bell Routine and I'm amazed by the amount of people who do not know the Bell routine. I understand that it's difficult and not every teacher is into it, but why don't we hear more about Bill Bell? He was a fantastic player, I'm always on the lookout to try to find some of his recordings, I've been trying to wait patiently for Bill Bell and his Tuba (I just bought a print of it for my practice room from tubahouse and it's awesome), but if you do a google search, next to nothing comes up. I hold him in the same regard as Arnold Jacobs (Jake is the man, don't get me wrong) but the amount of Jacobs stuff is staggering compared to the relatively small about of Bell stuff.

Any ideas?

Any favorite recordings, or books about Bell?

Anything about his teaching that sticks out in people's mind?

I'd love to generate more talk and the man and his teaching methods and his playing. I'm surprised to see how many people don't know that much about him.

There are some things in the works. (1) The Bill Bell and His Tuba LP will be released on CD very soon; (2) I am presently working on a discography of Bill Bell recordings with annotations (as well as a listing of his method books, tuba solos, and magazine/journal articles); (3) Check the I.T.E.A. website. There is an oral history section that includes interviews with some of Mr. Bell's students. These interviews include some information about his teaching.

I also remembered the book Mr. Bell Remembered by Carol Niwicke with Lloyd P. Farrar and I have a small booklet "Welcome Music Lovers" about Bill Bell by Kate Hawkins that has the Peanuts Soup recipie in it!
I look forward to that discography.

There is a memorial celebration in Perry, Iowa, near the anniversary of his death, August 7, 1971. From the archives, I see that the Bill Bell Tuba Day celebration has been held on the first Saturday in November.
