Bruckner 8

OK, let's say that Summit Records came to you and said that they wanted YOU to make a contribution to a hypothetical Orchestra Pro Volume II CD for tuba. They would like you to prpapre a 3 minute track on Bruckner 8. What do you say about the piece and what excerpts do you commit to tape?

Instead, why don't you try the following:
1. Purchase a complete part.
2. Purchase the Novak edition of the complete score.
3. Purchase several recordings that are available and listen to them (with your part and the score).
4. Learn all of the above and go take a lesson with an experienced professional like Mike Moore (you are in Athens) or Gene Pokorny and find out how this piece done.

I am one of small percentage of tubist who has actually had the honor to have played the Bruckner 8th (only twice). With all the hours of preparation that I have done with this symphony, I would be reluctant to give out free advice.

Sorry for the rant.

O.K., I'll bite
Sections that I would play:
MVT1
Pickup to three after A
pickup to 5 before 170
MVT2
5 after D to 61
MVT3
G to 130
MVT4
bar3 to 40
527 to 540

Hmmm... not too sure what to say in a quick sound bite, probably something about the sound quality one might use in Bruckner (organ type sound) clarity of rhythm and articulation and knowing how you fit into the big picture.

FWIW: I have never had the pleasure of playing this Bruckner Symphony before, but I have worked on the part. So you might want to consult someone who has far more orchestral experience than me, who would know more of the ins and outs of orchestral playing, who has a job with an orchestra full time and would know better what an audition committee is looking for, say for instance:

Is that the 2265 that Mr. Good is holding?

I don't think so, that's an old photo and I think his 2265 is sheet brass, silver plated.

*returns to the forum with a cooler head*

OK, rather than be a source of negative karma on the board, I will try to re-articlulate my response to Mr. Good's reply in a more professional and less sarcastic manner...

-----------------------------------------------

Though the procedure that Mr. Good outlines is a good, general way to approach any excerpt (I would add "#5: repeat several dozen times") , I framed my question in the context of the Orchestra Pro example because I was/am looking, specifically, for a short, "Reader's Digest" overview of the piece from a tubist's point of view. It is not my intention to have Tubenet "teach" me the piece. Rather, I am simply looking for a set of "talking points" to help me be more efficient and focused in my study of the piece.

-----------------------------------------------

For those of you, including Mr. Good, who may have been offended by the tone of my first (now-edited) posting, I do offer my sincerest apologies. Just like every other human being, I do occasionally open my mouth before I think things through. Hopefully, we can continue to discuss Bruckner.

By and large, Brucnkner's nine symphonies are all in a very similar style. If you listen to Gene's comments on Symphony No. 7 from "Orchestra Pro 1", probably all of them can apply to Symphony No. 8 in some way. Another thing that it has in common with the seventh is the use Wagner tubas. However, in the eighth, it seems that the Wagner tubas are more an extension of the horn section and less their own entity with the tuba like in the seventh.

Good luck! If you are playing this piece, I'm truly envious. It's an amazing symphony!!
