Have any suggestions?

Hello all, I just bought two tuba solos that I am not quite "getting." First off, I just got the solo by Lejarn Hiller entitled "Malta," with tape accompaniment. I was wondering if anybody knew any background info on this piece, seeing as there is none on the piece itself. Second, I also just bought a tuba and piano solo entitled "Omaggi e Fantasie" by Claude Baker. Does anyone know just how to play this piece? It's fairly difficult as is, without the hand-written instructions every couple of bars. I feel bad for whoever has to play the piano part. Also, does anyone know of any existing recordings out there? That would really help.
Thanks again,
Aaron "Tubafatness" Hynds
