Has anyone tried both of these tubas and can give a comparison of timbre, projection, response, and intonation? Thanks.

Both are excellent tubas. I played them side by side and thought the 1291 seemed a bit bigger than the 2000. Both had excellent high and low registers and both could take as much air as I could give them. I thought the miraphone had a dark sound and that the meinl weston was a present, resonant sound. I picked the 2000 myself, but I keep having second thoughts. I think I would really enjoy playing the miraphone in an orchestra or large band, but I think that the articulation felt easier to me on the 2000.

Either way, if I hadn't had the 2000 at the same time as I was playing the 1291 I'm sure I would have bought the 1291 and been very pleased with my purchase.

I like both instruments and have played very good examples of both side-by-side. The 2000 has some low notes that can get edgy and can "get away" on you - they don't center quite as well as on the Miraphone. The Miraphone has a little more depth to the sound and the projection is a good or better than the 2000. I like the ease of play of the Mirphone a bit more - but that's me. The Miraphone likes "fast" air a little more.

Chirs Blaha recently won the Charleston Symphony audition on a Miraphone 1291 (lacquer) after having traded his very good MW2000 for it. I feel that this speaks volumes. Chris is a great player and a gord friend, and more than likely would have won it on the 2000 but the Miraphone felt more comfortable to him - and that's what it's all about. What works for YOU, the player.
