It sounds like you have the sousaphone assembled incorrectly. The bell should be put on in a way that continues the curve of the body, in other words if the horn was lying on the ground the bell should face to the side, NOT to the front. If assembled this way the only place for the bell would be to the left, with the curve of the horn to the front.

Just get the bell pointing in the right direction and you'll figure the rest out by what feels best for you. Use the different bits & swivels to get everything into position... Then blow that horn!!!
