Last time I played the part, the muting instruction was printed so I guess that it is standard practice. makes an interesting effect anyway!
Composers shouldn't think too much -- it interferes with their plagiarism.

I just played it with the Ballet. I used my MW 45slp F Tuba and no mute. Sounded great.

I played it in Chester Catherdral a few years ago , remember mute markings ( printed not written in) in the infernal dance..
