Compensating valve

I was looking at an E-bay listing where they had a tuba with a compensating valve. I wanted to ask what does this valve do. Would this be the same as a 4th valve?

I guess I wouldn't take eBay as the final word on terminology. What listing was this?

a tuba with a compensating valve

It compensates the seller for the time needed to put a useless half-step valve on an otherwise non-descript tuba...

If it was a lacquer Besson, I saw it... the terminology is wrong. The 4th valve is a standard 4th valve (drops a fourth) in that Besson around-the-corner configuration. Most likely the horn itself is compensating, which means... er... tell the nice questioner what it means, Chuck.

I'm not sure with eBay's limited q-response window that he could do that. Probably just a word that the horn itself is compensating and refer him to Dwerden's webpage that explains it is all he'll be able to post.
