Post by passion4tuba »

I'm the section leader of my highschool tuba section and im making a packet that will include rules, info on the band, etc. but also in this packet im going to put in some passages from etude books and breathing exercises...i have all the good stuff..grigoriev (sorry for the poor spelling) vlashivich 1 kopprasch as well as gallay with some arban exerpts as well as flow studies from some arnold jacobs books....anything i'm missing? i heard the breathing gym..or sumthing like that was very helpful, but i have only heard little bits and peices about it, anyone have any first hand experience and benifits from it?

A good all-around book that is divided into units of increasing difficulty according to progression of key signature is the Rubank Advanced Method. No, it's not orchestral excerpts, but it's designed to address all aspects of playing so you can see where you need development. My high school band director required a minimum sight reading score on the Watkins-Farnum and completion of at least the 10th unit before you were eligible to sit in varsity band.

Be sure to include some maintenance information!!!! Make sure that they will know how to take care of their tubas once you are gone. I have seen kids try to oil sousaphone valves by putting Vaseline on them! You could also include various stretches and exercises to get them ready (physically) for the marching band season.

Tyrell's 40 progress studies, Bordogni's Bel Canto Studies and Fink's Studies in Legato are all pretty "doable" for high schoolers. If you really want to challenge them, get the Snedecor Low Etude book. Also, Bai Lin's lip slurs for trumpet are great for warming up and extending your upper register.
