The difference between I-pod and mp3 reproducion compared to cutting edge, high dollar technology is noticable to my ear but no big deal.
For any purpose except recordings for sale, this level of quality will serve. Recording practices. rehearsals, pass-around material for the guys in the band, as long as the relevant lines can be clearly heard is fine at mp3 level. Yes, the warmth and resonance may be lacking but you gotta eat too!

I know recording ensembles with an iPod can be done. A friend of mine recorded my brass quintet this last year with his iPod. The recording didn't sound bad at all, and I really enjoyed listening to ourselves play. I'm not sure how he did it, but it is possible.

I've been using the new Edirol R-09 for the last couple of weeks and have basically been very happy with it. The internal mics are nearly as good as as my AT-822 stereo mic, quality is great in WAV mode, very good (all but imperceptably different to my old ears) at high MP3 rates, degrading as you go to higher compression. The controls are very straightforward, trasfer to a computer very easy.

Downsides-- there is a little plastic door that covers the battery compartment and USB; it will break off sooner or later. My unit seems to have an issue where static is introduced by the automatic gain control circuitry. I seldom use it, but it's going back for repair anyway.

No.. what he said was that an earbud (and most types of headphones) could serve as a microphone.

The earphone jack is simply that.
