I Bit My Tongue! Ouch!

Occasionally I bite my tongue. No, not in the sense of keeping my mouth shut when I'd really like to comment on something, but really literally physically bite my tongue, usually towards the end of a dinner. Sometimes I just nick the edge and I deal with it. One time a couple of months ago I bit the center of my tongue so severely I had to sit up to sleep for a night so I did not aspirate from the bleeding, and I was unable to play for over two weeks.

Is it just my bad luck? Malocclusion (I did have braces as a teenager)? To much of a hurry to finish eating? Effects of having lost a couple of teeth? Most importantly, PREVENTION?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Some people just have a large tongue. I bite mine occasionally but when I do, I always bite it again and a knot rises up and I bite that which really chaps my cheeks.
Concentrating on the problem clears it up after awhile until the next time.

Just what I was going to say, some people just have big tongues. I don't bite it that much, but I do have a rather large tongue, gets in the way all the time, but never anything severe has happened. Sometimes I noticed I bit my tongue when I didn't swallow food in portions, such as chew a bit then swallow and so on and so on. Just don't shove it all in your mouth and you'll have a better sense of where your tongue is. That helped me a bit by doing that. You could try that. That's basically all I have. Just a problem that you should be wary of when you eat.

Hey, Water Music -- do you bite your tongue when you eat one of those golden fleeces?
