Mine are:
Roger Bobo
Leonard Bernstein
and many, many more.

You are one of my heroes, Yutakatuba.
Your screen name has given me insight as to a possible quintuple tonguing technique. I'll work on it and let you know if I can pull it off.

Richard Gibby- My High School Band Director
taught for 38 years and in that 38 years he got sweepstakes for 34 of the 38 years. this is an amazing accomplishment
he died just a couple of years after he retired
Sweepstakes in middle school is a 1 in concert and sight reading and in high school it is a 1 in marching, concert and sight reading
he helped me make All State w/o ever taking a private lesson
he was a great guy and a good tuba player
he graduated Sam Houston State University where i went to school
College Band Directors
Ralph Mills- learned an absolute ton from him as a musician and what ensembles are supposed to sound like
Fisher Tull- Loved playing in his Wind Ensenble at college for 3 years. what a wonderful man and musician and he helped me at every turn in college
Richard Frazier- my only tuba teacher and i learned much about my instrument and going to the first 2 ITECs with him in 73 and 74 and then to go take lessons from Mr Jacobs.
all my teaching skills i have used for life have been because from what i learned from him and playing with him. we worked hard but an absolute ton of fun. the Octubafest's were 3 to 5 days of just great music and fun.

SJSUW wrote:RVW and Miles Davis
(for their music and their humanity)
I could be wrong, but I have heard that Miles isn't what we would call the ideal human. There is even a story that says he flicked off a young child after the kid's father told Miles how much his son loves Miles' music.

Not trying to subdivide this too much, but I always considered a hero to be one who gave of themselves to affect myself or other's directly. So in the "heros" list are:
My Mom and Dad, who encouraged me and my sisters to learn and play music. For me that meant trios with Dad on cornet and Mom on the piano, me on a baritone back in those days.
My Jr. High band teacher, Doug McFarlane who put up with endless stupidity and silliness. He had a way of making us want to be better without browbeating. He was the person who encouraged me to switch to tuba, and was willing to even teach me accordion during one of my moments of Jr. High insanity.
And last in my "heros" list is my friend Kristina who is a elementary band teacher. She has a fire and energy for teaching that is phenominal. I imagine she will be on somebody else's "heros" list someday.
As far as musical "idols" go the short list is:
Prince
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Otis Clay
Leroy Anderson
Gershwin
Sibelius
James Brown
Robert Cray
Kate Bush
To cover multiple artists, favorite groups are:
Genesis
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Rush
Steely Dan
