I've used both the Nate Griffith and the and the Wick on my B&S 4/4.

The Wick was the best by a long-shot. Better intonation, less stuffy, better "tuba-sound".

Schlipfinger mutes.

tuba-mute.com

Austrian, really sturdy.

Best I've ever played on. If you can swing the $, you'll love it. They have several styles, including a travel model that disassembles to fit inside your bell entirely for placement in the hard case, it sounds great as well.

Another vote for the Denis Wick mutes. Have one for my tuba and my euph and love them.

I remember reading a great post that detailed how to create your own tuba mute. Personally I have very little skill with regards to building anything so I have not tried to make my own. I thought I remembered seeing a website someone made about how they made a tuba mute but I could not seem to find the post. Does any one remember this or am I crazy?

In college I borrowed my friends mute from time to time. I think it was a H&B but that was many beers ago. Oops, I meant years. The H&B seem to be pretty popular as well as the Dennis Wick mutes. Just remember that all mutes are a trade off of sound, volume and intonation.

Good luck.

Hey, Henry - I don't think this is the article you are referring to, but it's along the same lines and good reading as well:

I would have to put in a strong reccomendation for Ron Apperson's mutes.. They sound great and are very much in tune.

H&B...Wick...H&B...Wick -- I can't decide. I guess eventually I'll have to get one of each. Wick is superlative. Period. H&B stonelined actually gets you a different usable tone, without sounding either simply muffled on one hand or like a toy trumpet on the other. After that, it's your favorite flavor du jour.
