Personally, I think it's a tuba.

i've played four of them at various times, and one of them was very good. it had great intonation, a firm bottom and nice flexibility...so i recommended it to one of my students, and he has one that's pretty good, but the intonation could be better and it's a little stuffy in the high register.

I was amazed that the other two came from the same maker, let alone the same model. intonation was awful, high range sucked, bottom warbled around...

so, i guess the bottom line is that they're a little more inconsistent than other instruments i've tried. i know that some high schools have been buying these, so maybe the "assembly line" has been running a little too fast. Come to think of it, those other two had been bought by band director friends of mine....

Well, when Empire Brass played with the symphony here, they ended with a sousa march, with everyone playing. I could hear the sole tuba (2155) on the symphony's Oom-Pahs above everything, in the loudest passages. He has no trouble with intonation or sound quality either.

Maybe it's the player, or maybe it's the tuba being played by the player.
