Actually, a trumpet buddy of mine has the same thing. It has to do with the acids in his mouth. So, it's no "b/s" when it's said about this blue tarnish. Adios!

Tell him that he's got to quit chewing on those ballpoint pens...

I can't remember which detergent or cleaner I used once, but it actually caused some tarnish to magically appear on an older mpc. I had to use tarnish remover to clean it back up again. It's been too long ago to remember exactly what happened.

This vague memory, and the light tarnish that eventually forms on all my unused mpcs (before I started storing them in ziploc bags), causes me to also guess "tarnish" -- either from the choice of soap, or exposure to some source of sulpher -- either in liquid or atmospheric form.

Any chance the trumpet owner is a smoker? (Just a crazy guess of a theoretical source of sulfer??? 2nd-hand smoke???) Does the owner have any unusual dietary selections? Does he jog in/around heavy traffic right before playing his horn? (Just brainstorming options...)

BTW, several of the professional musicians (wind musicians) I know in these here parts do smoke -- seems strange to me (of course, the local area tubists do NOT!).

Just some wild guesses -- put 'em into the theory category.

Cheers,

I've seen some of the old Herco mouthpieces turn blue-ish. They look like stainless but I think they are plated with either chrome or rhodium.

we had a blue tarnished Faxx french horn mouthpiece a little while ago... I was looking for a mouthpiece for a customer to try out a french horn with and I found one that was still in the original bag and navy blue... and yes, I'm sure it wasn't a Kelly :þ

As a matter of fact, he is a smoker. Here's the thing, though: my other roomate(trombone) is as well and doesn't have that problem. As far as diet, nothing unusual for a college student! So maybe a combination of smoking/acids?

Sounds like a trip back to the 70's. Far out.

LOL -- amusing what a minor mis-quote can accomplish!
