Hey,
I have the box set of these performances (not all of them are included in the DVD's {D'oh!}) and I was watching the "What is Imprssionism?" episode. Up until this one the tuba player was clearly William Bell, but on this one there was a new person. The concert was recorded on Nov. 23, 1961 and aired on Dec 1, 1961, I'm guessing that it was Joe Novotny? (who you can see very clearly in the later episodes, esp. the Symphony Fantastique) But he was not playing a king, it was just a quick shot, but it was a front action piston valve horn, young guy short hair Horn-rimmed glasses, looks like everyone else from that era to me. Any ideas? Was there anyone who played in the orchestra between Bell and Novotny?

Lew Waldeck maybe?

Man, I never knew that these were out on DVD. I just looked them up on Amazon ($134!) and saw that one of the reviewers had a list of which shows were and were not included. Wouldn't it figure that my three favorites weren't included?

I grew up on Bernstein and the Young People's Concerts, and they were probably the biggest single influence on my interest in classical music.

By the way, does anyone know what happened to a fabulous young oboeist (obist? obeast?) named Mark Salkind who appeared in one of the concerts?

Yeah, but this concert he might have had a sub? I didn't recognize the guy (although he might have been a young Novotny).

I have not seen the video in question, but when you say it was a young guy with horn rim glasses and a front action piston tuba... Could it be Harvey Phillips?

It looked bigger than a Conn, and it was just a quick shot, but I don't think that it was Harvey. I'll watch it again.
