I used to use a PT-72 with my 983. The reason I found my way to this mpc was that it helped the notes in the compensating low register (low Bb and down to pedal Eb) to pop out more immediately. I was having trouble with a quick response in this range and the PT-72 resolved this issue for me.

I've used a PT63 for about 8 years now, I keep going back to it. Works very well in all around playing. Pat Sheridan told me the 983 is very mouthpiece sensitive, I'm inclined to believe him. Some things I've tried just don't work for me at all. Tom Holtz has a J. Klier somethingoranother... maybe ask him what it is, he likes it a lot. Good luck in your search.

Wick 3 if the older smaller receiver, 3L if a "standard" or "American" receiver
A lot of people like a Bach 24AW, but I am not one of them.

I have tried a number of mouthpieces with my 983 and the only ones that worked for me to be able to play in tune were the Wick 3 and the Loud Mouthpieces LM-15. The horn played flat for me on any other mouthpieces with the slide all the way in. I currently use the LM-15, which I like the shape and size of and I love the feel of stainless steel.
