Tape for Case

Old cloth covered wooden tuba case. Covering is coming off the wood, but none of the tape I've tried will stay stuck for long. I've tried electrical tape and duct tape and neither worked very well.

Don't care about looks -- would just like to keep the case going -- any sugestions?

Would applying Gorilla glue under the cloth work?

Book binding tape available at most office supply stores. Kinda looks like masking tape, but a much better quality. I've used it to bind old books that were falling apart. You know the ones that had the cloth covered bindings almost like the old instrument cases.

Allied Supply has a case repair tape that might be pretty good... I haven't tried it myself. Black or brown. Your local repair shop can probably order you a 2" x 60 yard roll for around $15 plus postage. That's a lot of tape, but I'm sure there would be other uses for the stuff.

If you are just trying to glue the existing cloth back down to wood I would use a contact cement or white glue. Both of these will be dry in a couple of hours or less if you aren't in a rush and don't use too much. The important thing is to keep the cloth in place while it is drying.

Don't bother with tape. Go to a hardware store or auto repair store and get an aerosol can of contact cement, you know, like the can that Jake Blues sprayed under the accelerator pedal of the Good Ole' Boys RV in the original Blues Brothers movie. That will keep your covering on, whether vinyl or cloth. After that, if you want to tape the corners just for some added bump protection, go for it.

You spray it on both surfaces lightly but evenly, give it a couple of minutes to get tacky, then carefully lay the covering down exactly where you want it. I say exactly, because once it touches, it's there to stay.

Carpet seaming tape will certainly work, but it is heat-activated and needs a fairly hot iron or other heat source.
