The eleventh symphony (The year 1905).
Also the 24 preludes and fugues. I am listening to the recording by Tatjana Nikolajeva right now.

I like Symphonies #4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15. The others are ok, too...

Also, The Execution of Stepan Razin (sp?) is really cool. We played it back in school. You don't really see many recordings of it, though...

I listened to some of his quartet music on NPR St Paul Sunday on the way to church yesterday. What I found ironic was the comment made about his music that at the time, the USSR criticized his music for being too progressive or even avant-garde from their perspective as they were wanting him to, "Write for the masses," while the West, having just been through the development of atonality, considered his writing archaic.

Piano Concerto No. 1.

It is a virtuoso piece for the trumpet. I accidentally heard this piece for the first time at a CSO concert, Herseth was beyond amazing. The pianist pulled him to the front for a bow.

You youngins out there need to pick up a recording of it for your sight singing classes (it will make you a killer minor 2nd and tritone person)
