Concerto ideas

Post by tuba114 »

Can anyone tell me about the Steven Winteregg-Concerto, for tuba and orchestra, (like skill level for both Soloist and the accompanying parts?)
Also can you suggest other tuba Concertos that can be played with a youth orchestra, other than the Vaughn Williams and Gregson? Thanks,

The Holmboe Concerto is pretty nice, but there's still pieces such as Eugene Anderson's Concerto, Jan Bach's Quintet for Tuba and Strings, Baker's Sonata for Tuba and String Quartet, Bernard Heiden's Concerto, Presser's Concerto for Tuba and strings, Gunther Schuller's Capriccio for Tuba and Orch, Schmidt Concerto and who could forget John Williams' Attempt for Tuba. Hope this helps a bit...

The Ewazen Concerto is pretty fun to play, and is very tuneful. Also, the difficulty may be a little too high, but James Curnow's Symphonic Variants would be good as well, (assuming you play the version for tuba and orch, not for euph.)

Cimarron Music Press will be publishing a new Concerto by Barbara York in the next day (maybe tonight) or so.

If you happened to be at ITEC, John Griffiths played the piece on his recital.

It is a very tuneful piece that is not over the top in terms of difficulty. There will be an .mp3 posted on the site for all to hear. I will let you know when. If you would like to hear a sample or receive a .pdf sample of the part, please email me off the list:

bvdpress@snet.net

The first version to appear on the site will be with piano accompaniment, but the orchestral version will follow in the very near future.

In addition to her Concerto, we have also just added a piece by her called "Directions". This was written for Tuba and Concert Band and the version on the site currently is with piano accompaniment (it was added earlier today). Like above, the full accompaniment will be released in the near future.

We will also be adding several more of Barbara's compositions. Three Romances for Tuba and Piano (played by Don Harry at ITEC) will be next, followed by a newly composed piece called "Elegy for an Angel" for Tuba and Piano. It is set on 2 movements.

Time to get back to work.
