Doyen Bandstand Series CD 046, Black Dyke Mills Band

Philip Wilby's 20-minute "Revelation: Symphony for Double Brass on a Theme of Purcell" alone makes this CD worth buying. I know some folks here are strangely averse to this style of brass playing, but I don't think anyone could listen to this piece in its entirety without going "wow".

Dynamic range is HUGE, masterful pedal tones throughout the band in various spots (especially tuba and cornet at the beginning), solos in the slow middle section are absolutely musical. I don't think Purcell could sound any more grandiose than he does in the final section.

To me (a dumb American), it sounds like a good example of where brass band music is today. It's a long way from Holst...

Check it out if you get a chance.
