What is the most popular combination of CC/F or BBb/Eb tubas that people have? Why or why aren't they the same brand? I'm thinking that many people with the same contra will also have the same bass.

That and the availability of horns at a given price range at the time the urge for a horn became too much to bear.

If I had a 3-valve Eb to go with my BBb, then I'd be set, if I could only find a brass band around here to play in (closest one is 200 miles away, and that's a bit of a commute!)

Really, its not so much a matter of what they sound best on, you can buy good BBb's and good CC's, and it can all be the same, its the quality of the horns respectively. However, depending upon what you're going into you may want to consider different horns. An example of this is that the Berlin Philharmonic only takes BBb tuba players, which is why Carol Jantsch isn't over there....

I guess there are two schools of thought about bass/contrabass combinations.
Some people want their bass tuba to sound as similar as possible, to their contrabass, so the transition from one to the other is seemless.
I personally like some difference in tone quality (hopefully both will be good, each in it's own way) between my bass, and contrabass. I think it allows more expressive opportunities for the tubist.
