I bought a 16mm print of a 1958 film called "Meet The Brasses".
It stars the NYBQ, and I assume Harvey Phillips is in the tuba chair. It's a film made for kids that shows what the various instruments can do via demonstrations.
It's going to cost about $150 to transfer the film to some sort of digital medium. From there I can transfer the digital medium to DVD.
I don't want to sell copies of this film, since I don't hold the copyright to it, but would it be wrong to ask any interested parties to help pay for the transfer costs? If ten of us are interested, we pay $15 each (maybe adding $2 for shipping) and we each get a DVD of the film as a result. No more copies are made after that.

not sure if this is legal,but i'm in too. so, what is the history of modern brass quintet?What is the relationship of NYBQ to PJBE? Was there any comparing of notes,exchange of ideas or arrangements?Joint concerts? what was the timeline like between the two groups.Just doesn't seem likely that they would evolve independently at the same time in the same configuration.Behold- the educational powers of TUBENET!

The only cross-pollenation that I know of between the NYBQ and the PJBE is that, in the early 1950's, Phillip Jones heard the NYBQ in concert and decided to add a tuba to his, then, quartet. Phillip Jones then became active in searching out and commisioning new materials for the PJBE. Years later, Phillip Jones again heard the NYBQ and, where the PJBE had blazed new trails in repertoire, the NYBQ was playing essentially the same stuff that Phillip Jones had heard years before.

Since I do not have the book at my finger-tips, this is from "Odyssey, The Story Of The PJBE" as filtered through my memory.

The film transfer is now complete, and I'd like to go pick it up, so anyone who hasn't submitted their payment please do so at your earliest possible convenience, so I can pick up the film, transfer it to DVD, ship it out to you, enable you to watch it and enjoy it, etc. etc.
