I hate having to play when I have a resp infection. Meds make you dry out, can;t hear well. I hate it.
Just played a dixie job, with a banjo player from Rosie O'Grady's years past.
It was his father-in-laws wake.
We all know how it was done at rosie's. Hard to play like that sick.
My mouth was so dry my cheeks stuch to the sides of my mouth. And that was with gum in there too.
It was worth it though, as I am not playing as much as I would like to be. Plus, it was Tony's last wish to have a band play him out of this world into the next.
May you have eternal peaceful rest Tony.

I've been recovering this week from bronchitis myself: Amoxicillin 875mg 2/day. I tried to back to work Thursday, but all I did was wear myself out too much for today. Next Monday HAS to be better!

Not that it applies to any of the situations here, but I think many (most?) "colds" are really bacteria that has drifted from the sinuses into the upper respiratory tract because of allergies. I am downright religious about taking one 30mg pseudoephedrine and two 25mg diphenhydramine etc. (generic Benadryl) pills before bed. It's during the night when the crud gets from the head into the respiratory tract.
If I actually get a real cold, I take whatever amount of pseudoephedrine is required to stop the snot. If I can prevent the snot, then I can prevent the bacteria from getting into places I really don't want it. If I am successful, the cold passes quickly. I think, with a three-weak cold, 4 days of it is the cold, and the rest is dealing with the bacterial infection you got from the cold (the green stuff you cough up).
There might be some health implications to blasting the system with pseudoephedrine. But there are definitely health implications to bad bugs infesting your respiratory tract.
Better living through chemistry.

Speak for yourself! I do good to sleep in a bed without side rails on a normal night!

I sat next to a bass player during a rehearsal where he coughed continuously for the whole rehearsal. Afterwards, I aked him if he was okay. He said "No, I went to the doctor today and he told me I have pneunomia."
My first thought was how irresponsible. If I or anyone else in the orchestra get sick because of your inconsiderate behaviour...

We had a high-dollar New Years Eve gig and I got a huge tooth ache. My gig was rhythm guitar and trumpet.
I took 7 Anacin before the gig and 7 more during and washed them down with bourbon. I made it to midnight when a high C on the trumpet caused the side of my gum to blow out like a mini-volcano. What a relief!
The last two hours were almost enjoyable.

I'm trying the water, Echineasa, and zinc lozenges cure, I hope! I'll either get better by next weekend, or it'll get worse and in 2 weeks I'll need antibiotics. Years ago, a doctor told me I'm susceptible to sinus infections because I have a deviated septum. So, I get colds that get worse and become sinus infections. It's lousy for a month, unless I somehow get rid of it in a week or so. So, let's see what echineasa and zinc does. Any other ideas? Teaching and playing isn't fun when you're sick and I have Yankees ALCS tickets for game 2 on Oct. 11.

Be sure to disinfect your horn - Bacteria and viruses love nice warm, dark places where they can listen to fine tuba music for hours on end....
No need to keep re-infecting yourself.
