These are some Before and After pics of an old York 4/4 BBb tuba I bought a few years ago on eBay. This restoration was done by a Paul Avery, a young man who is just about to graduate with a music degree at Florida State University. I needed to save as much money as possible so we decided to not have it re-silver plated.

When I bought this tuba few years ago, it looked awful. As a mater of fact it wasn’t until I showed it to Joe Sellmansberger about a year ago that I even though it COULD be restored.

If anyone would like some really good work done at a VERY reasonable price, Paul is one of the people to contact. If anyone is interested in talking with him, just PM me and I will send you his contact information.

The result of the restoration looks good.

And the final result gave the answer to a question I asked some years ago within the tuba communities:

There was a photo from the festivities around the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. It showed the Canadian Brass together with Dock Severinsen. It was a “socialâ€

Way cool, its a BBb. Model 33, fairly common but fun. Very good job (from what I can see) of bringing it back to playable shape and it looks good. :) I've restored a couple and it is understandable to not do the full job before one knows its real playability. I am very pleased to see another brought back to life. Way to go Paul, he should be quite proud of himself for taking on such a difficult task so early in the game. Here is an image of what you can look forward to once it is fully restored. Congrats!

The other tuba on the couch is indeed a monster Eb and it is a great playing horn as well. The CC Joe mentioned was originally a 3 valve upright Eb tuba.

There was only one piece from the original York that had to be cut. It can easily but put back together with one of the ferrules I used on the CC conversion if anyone wants to preserve the original York for historical purposes. (but it’ll cost you.)

Actually my son, Noah did most of the work on the CC conversion. I plan to have it professionally repaired now that we have figured out how it ought to go together. The lead pipe is the original York lead pipe and I have a very good upright York valve set for sell.
