another stupid mouthpiece question

I am looking into getting a G&W mouthpiece to use with my PT4P. I will only have the money for one and will probably get it in about a month, gotta wait for pay day. I mostly do rural small band and small orchestra work and a little solo work as well. I have been using a Marcinciewicz (I don't know how to spell it an it is at my other school so HAH!) Jim Self but I am willing to try something different.

Now, I know that it is the player, not the mouthpiece and different people need different things, but a pesonal suggestion would be nice. I also am the tuba teacher for the region and the nearest great tuba player is about 250 miles away so I can't go ask my teacher.

Now the question. Which G&W mouthpiece(s) would you suggest I try to go with my horn and playing situation?

I've heard that you can order a whole bunch of them and return the ones you don't want. I'd suggest you try them all... and also against some non G&W.

The website lists the following as CC mouthpieces: Bayamo, Caver, Taku, Williwaw and Diablo. I guess those are listed from largest to smallest. Given your playing situation, I might count out the Bayamo and the Caver.

Matanuska, Bora and Churada are listed as F/Eb mouthpieces. Largest to smallest again, I believe.

According to the website, the Williwaw, Diablo or Matanuska would be ideal for your situation.

Since the GWs are stainless, and you can put more air through them with more focus, I agree you could even go a size smaller, like the Taku.

The Marc Self is @ 33mm cup id. GW doesn't make a 33mm cup id. The Bayamo and Caver are larger, the Diablo, Williwaw and Taku are smaller.

So, you need to decide if you believe you need a larger or smaller rim than your current mouthpiece. If you want to go with the same diameter, then there are other options available. A good comparison chart as a point of departure is here:

And remember, throats, backbores, rim profiles, cup profiles, are all different, and are all relative. The charts should be used just to get you into the ballpark, to narrow the universe down to a few choices, not pinpoint the mouthpiece up front.

I would just like to publicly thank Ivan for his great help in choosing a mouthpiece. While he did talk me into the most expensive stainless piece , the MMVI, I am not in the least disappointed.

EDIT: I meant to also say that this is the best feeling and responding mouthpiece I have ever tried. I was a little afraid of the flat rim but no more, it was great. Thanks again.
