The Dick Strauss (alright, Richard) horn concerto seems to have popped up on a few tuba auditions lately. I seem to remember that a relatively recent specific arrangement was requested. What is the "De Facto" Dick Strauss concerto arrangement for tuba?

I agree, the Graham is worth the money!


I have used it extensively and love it.


Just beware, there are a couple misprints in the Strauss, but nothing you won't pick up on RIGHT away. (key signature in the middle fast section is wrong)

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I have been thinking of publishing a bunch of the Horn charts we all play on tuba. I generally just read the horn part, but figure it would be easier if I had an ctual tuba part!

Here are the pieces I would start with:

Strauss - 1 and 2
Schumann - Adagio and Allegro
Haydn - Concerto 2 (I love this chart, but I am not sure if anyone else does?
Some of the smaller Strauss or Saint-Saens pieces might work as well.

I would be open to any other pieces in the public domain, just don't mention this to my wife who is a Horn player.

If I remember correctly, the de facto edition of the Strauss horn concerti is from Boosey & Hawkes. It includes the solo part for horn in E flat, so it can be read directly. If it is good enough for horn auditions, it must also suffice for tuba auditions.

Or the Schirmer version which is dirt cheap! Not sure if it is in Eb??

The edition of Strauss 1 that was on the NY Phil audition was done by my first mentor, Ted Cox (the man who taught me everything, except how to lose a tuba). E-mail me privately if you'd like his contact info...jobey

Jobey, that may be the one I am looking for. Since it was on the audition list, is it published and readily available??

P.S. If you do enough of your own work on your horns with a hacksaw, torch, power drill, handlebar wrap, and packing tape (and let your significant other help out with a 2 lb mallet) it reduces the chances of having them stolen.
