When domains expire, bad things happen.

Our band's web page disappeared last week because the domain expired. Network Solutions is the registrar. The domain is owned by the Loudoun Community Band, Inc., and the guy who registered it is no longer in the area or reachable by any of the methods I knew about.

I had to prove to Network Solutions that I was a legal representative of the corporation, and then I had to provide a photo ID with a picture they could recognize (not so easy these days with watermarked ID's that specifically prevent clear photocopies), plus a request letter, an affadavit, and a printout from the Virginia State Corporate Commission so that they could independently verify my connection to the corporation. Sheesh. I had to provide much less to get my signature on the band's bank account.

Then, Network Solutions tells me that they must allow the previous guy an opportunity to refute my claim. I asked them if they would require HIM to provide proof that HE is a legal representative of the corporation if he did. I asked them if he had provided such proof when he originally registered the domain under the name of our corporation, or if he had provided a photo ID (answer, NO in both counts).

Then, I said I just wanted to pay to renew the domain without changing the contact person--we would deal with that later. They cannot accept payment unless the person can log into their account. They have no mechanism for accepting payment any other way. They said they can't take payment from someone who isn't authorized, and I told them that was a load of bull. I could call the power company and pay the bill of any random person without a second's hesitation. I've never seen a company try so hard not to take money.

The whole process seemed like it was cooked up by a couple of business amateurs.

Network Solutions gives lip service to corporate domain ownership, but their whole process is built around individuals, and they put the entire burden of dealing with problems on their customers. Thus, I can imagine all sorts of things that could explain Tubanews's expired domain that don't mean Rose has given up on it. But I don't know.

It gets worse. I had a domain that never quite got off the
ground. But, I paid for a 3-year registration. The technical contact was with an ISP that went belly up.

Eventually, the registration expired, and I started receiving
"final notices" that the domain would go away unless I
paid up. I ignored these - I was happy to see the registration end.

Most recently, I've gotten email telling me that the domain
name has been taken over by someone else, and good old NSI figures that I'm owed a few $$ as compensation for my old
domain name being sold out from under me.

I'm ignoring those e-mails, too.

Looks like NSI has one team instantly killing domains that
people want to keep up, and another team providing life support for domains with DNR documents already filed...

The only plus in this scenario is that Rose is listed as the admin, technical and registrant contact for the domain. It's also somewhat in her favor that even when domains slide past expiration date, if the registrant is still interested, there's somewhat of a built-in grace period.

I'll shoot her a line and see if there's something I can do to help get the site back on-line. I have 200GB of server space and 1TB of monthly data transfer that's hardly being used. If it's a bandwidth issue, then we might as well say that's not an issue.

There is absolutely no way that I would ever name an ISP to be either the technical or administrative contact for a domain I owed. I had my fill of NSI 10 years ago with the "FAX us this completed form and a copy of your driver's licence" garbage after I decided to drop my current ISP and he didn't want to cooperate.

There are many very good registrars out there who offer discount registration with automatic renewal. To administer them you need only have a username and password.

Any further update? The site is still not up.

It took two full weeks to get our band website back up, and that's with diligent and persistent pressure from me, the webmaster and Guy With The Checkbook. I expect Dan's site to be down for a week.

Tubanews seems to have been replaced by a placeholder rather than a message from the kindly registrar. Who knows what process that registrar will require.

This domain name expired on 10/28/2006 and is pending renewal or deletion.

F'gosh sakes, guys, please use GoDaddy or one of the other registrars who will automatically renew your domain names!

NSI is the pits. They prey on those who have domains expire.

The web site was down until the afternoon. I somehow missed any message about the expiration. Its good for another nine years. Sorry if it caused any confusion or worry.

Problem is, once you have it registered with NSI, it's a monumental chore to reregister it with another registrar. Near as I can tell, you have to let it expire, and then hope nobody else gets the domain before you reregister it.

ICANN doesn't allow them to deny you a transfer. When I transfered my domains from NSI, I had to submit a form, and a notarized letter and a copy of my driver's license.

Which I did--and they cooperated grudgingly. It's simpler nowadays.
