Maslanka Symphony No.4

Post by ZNC Dandy »

Does anyone know of a good recording of this around? I heard the piece for the first time last week, and was blown away. I have lust in my heart for it...

Hey there...

I am not a Maslanka expert by any stretch of the imagination, but one of my colleagues is. In my mind, this is THE recording of the 4th Symphony:

It is performed by the Illinois State University Wind Symphony from Normal, Illinois. A truly wonderful recording in every respect. I was in the ensemble that gave the 2nd performance of this piece several (and I mean several) years ago, but this newer recording blew me away. Dr. Steve Steele, the conductor, is an enormous advocate for Dr. Maslanka's music and performs just about everything that he composes. It is ironic that you mentioned Dr. Maslanka as he is on our campus this week working with 3 of our bands that are performing his compositions. The Wind Symphony will be premiering a new concerto for Percussion and Wind Ensemble later this week Very amazing music.

If you are into Maslanka, check out his 2nd and 7th Symphonies as well as his compositions entitled "Testament", "A Child's Garden of Dreams" and "Tears." Amazing music. Now we just need him to write a tuba concerto!!!

Enjoy

The Dallas Wind Symphony just released a CD featuring the music of David Maslanka. Although I have not heard this CD, if it is anything like their others, it is great.

I'm a student at Eastman, and the Wind Ensemble here produced a pretty good recording of it last year. Let me know if you want me to send it to you.

The Dallas Wind Symphony new recording "Garden of Dreams" - of all Maslanka music is terrific. It will blow your socks off.
The 4th Symphony is one heck of a powerful piece. See
www.DWS.org I can't imagine you'll find a better recording.
