(Hopefully this won't count as homework help, I did all the research and the work already, just can't get technology to work right for me.)

I am writing a paper for a class and was wondering how do you put lines of music and parts of the score within the text itself? As of right now, my plan is to have copies of the score in an appendix type section in the back of the essay and frequently reference checking it, but I think it'd be much simpler to put it in the text. I'm using Microsoft Word and can't seem to figure anything out. Thanks in advance to all who reply.

Using Finale, click on the graphics tool. Export as a TIFF file, and then simply import the graphic into your document. You can crop it using any photo editor that you want.

A couple of other options:

If the samples are long, put the music in Finale and export the whole page to a .pdf file and then assemble with .pdf files of the text when it is complete.

Or if it is a short assignment, do the whole thing (including text) in Finale.

Another more tedious option, for those with feeble computer skills: print off all of the musical examples in your music program. When you work in your document file... leave empty space where the music samples should go and print the file.

Literally cut (ie w/scissors) out the seperate musical examples and tape/glue them into the spaces within the text you just printed. Once this is all done... go to a photocopier and photocopy every page with a musical example. If you do this carefully, it will look very professional.

Again, this is a lot of tedious work, but it does work if you can't figure out the excellent advice above.

Ditto Brian's post, but for "Finale" read "Finale or Sibelius" !

If you don't have either Finale or Sibelius, there is a free version of Finale called Finale Notepad. Not sure what functions it has and does not have, but maybe an option!

Finale vs. Sibelius:

IMHO, they are both very good programs. Depending upon what you need a program for, they both have advantages and disadvantages. Get the trial versions from both companies and see which is the best fit for you.
