Need info about old Eb tuba

Post by GC »

I just began playing an old Eb tuba that belongs to the local Civil War band (Georgia 8th Regiment Band). The engraving on the bell is:

La Motte (in italic text)
The Biltmore Bros Co
Cincinnati, Oh

This is a fairly small top-valve piston horn with about a 14" bell and lots of ornate engraving on ferrules and brace pads. For a small old horn, it plays surprisingly well in tune and has a dark, rich tone.

Does anyone know anything about this horn or the company that built it?
