more so Tenor but bass can also post their opinions.. What mouthpiece do you use?

I'm using a 1 1/2 G right now, what bout you?

I like a Schilke 50 for its tone, and the inside cup diameter at exactly 1 inch is what seems to fit me best. Because it has a little deeper cup, it's a tad more difficult in the upper range, but I usually play 2d or 3d parts when I double on my H N White King 3B, so it's not an issue. The rim is the "standard" Schilke rim, which may be slightly more rounded than most people like, especially when doubling. Even though I like the tone, I'm thinking about having the rim recontoured to more of a Bach style rim, just because that's more of what I'm used to.

When playing outdoors, I've actually had some good luck with the DEG nylon cup. Very comfortable, and the nickel shank keeps the tone from deteriorating. I haven't tried a Kelly bone mpc, however.

I found that the back pressure NOT the rim size and shape were my biggest obstacles to overcome.


Easiest solution? Get rid of a lot of the pressure.

I no longer play tenor, but when I did I played on a Schilke 51D as well. As for bass trombone, I'm currently on a Schilke 60, though looking at other possibilities.

I play a G&W Churada on my bass trombone, which is actually their smallest tuba mouthpiece. Works great, and I can even play up in the double-Bb-stratosphere.

The low notes with the bass-bone using this mouthpiece sound something like a cimbasso played through a 12-foot diameter megaphone.

small bore tenor = Bach 4C or Schilke 51 (not D)

Little Tenor - Bach 6 1/2 AL stock
Big Tenor - Bach 4G stock
Bass - Bored Shilke 60 with a cut down Wick shank normally
Bass - Bach 30E Eb tuba with a cut down Wick shank for those bottom parts in tbone choir. I admit, I cheat.

Tenor: Bach 4 (no letter)

Symphonic Tenor-Alain Trudel Signature-Great Orchestral/Concert Band sound, very comfortable.
Jazz Tenor-Regular ol' 6 1/2AL-bright and nasty jazz sound, not too comfortable since its so small, but oh well....

for tenor I use an old set of Giardinelli 3 rims with various size cups and shanks for small and large recievers.

For bass I use a Schilke 59 and I have a bored out Schilke 59 with a 60 back bore. I also very rarely but ocassinally will use a 60.
I just got a Yamaha Douglas Yeo, but that is pretty big like a 60, so I don't think I will use it too much. i actually posted it for sale here but it never sold. (hint, hint, hint)

For jazz lead I use a Bach Megatone 7C on my King 3B. For section/ orchestral work I use a Wick 5AL on my King 4B (F) and for bass stuff I use a Shilke 60 on my George Roberts Olds.

I play a bach 40b(or is it d....) tenor with trigger open wrap.. pretty nice horn for such a novice player as myself..

I'll be playing mainly 2nd/3rd parts or bass tbone part on this horn. I am debating whether I should venture to find a MP or stick with one of the three in my collection (1 1/2g, 6 1/2 AL, or 5G) and wait till my playing is to a point I know what I want in a mp... Out of the three I like the 1 1/2g the most, defiantly the most comfortable feeling mouthpiece..

I use a Jet Tone Urbie Green Model S on an Urbie Green King 2B.

I use a 24W (not AW) on my Mirafone 184 BBb, a Bach 1G on my Besson Bass T-bone and on the rare occasion that I play my Conn 4H, I use a old, old, old (did I say old) Bach 3.

For Bass Bone, I use a 1 1/2 G Bach mouthpiece, and for lower tenor bone parts, I use a Bach 3. When I want to use my tenor bone for screamin' parts, I use a 11C.

Bass trombone I'm currently using a Denis Wick 2BL but am looking for a deal on a 0 to try. Large bore tenor either a Wick 4AL heavey wall or a 4BL. Small bore I usually use which ever MP I grap first out of a Bach 6 1/2al, 7C, 9, or 12C. I'm looking for a Wick 4BS and then I'll probably get rid of the res.

good deal, im playing bass tbone part in one of the jazz bands, just posted today.. I'm in the position of I have this nice bach large tenor I can use or a really really bad school bass bone, so im opting to play on my large tenor.. and no selling the tenor and buying a bass is not a option.

Hopefully though we will recieve new bass tbones soon as we are part of a conn/selmer program, the only question is when they are to arrive! until then i'll be using my tenor!

When I play t-bone I'm usually the lead in a jazz band. I play on an Olds Ambassodor from the '60s. I play on the mouthpieces that came with the horn when I got it 8 years ago. They are and Olds 3 and a Bach 11C. From what I've been told they are really small...I haven't done much research on the mouthpieces (according to the Band Museum in Pine Bluff they are pretty rare, but that's about all I know). They're great for lead playing, easy to pop those high notes out.

Before I recently got my King 2B I played an Olds Ambassador I've had for about 30 years. Picked it up new in a record store (yes, record store). A good jazz horn, especially given that it was considered a student model. Weighs quite a bit more than the Urbie Green model 2B, though, which has a shortened tuning section so first position is about an inch out so you can use slide vibrato in first. I'm still getting used to the altered slide positions.

King doesn't make that model any longer. Martin has the Urbie Green name now, but I haven't seen one so I don't know how it compares.

My King was built sometime in the 60's (I think) and I got it from a fellow band member who buys and restores old instruments. It is in pristine, like new condition with an essentially frictionless slide. The horn is worth several times what he sold it to me for, and we both knew it.

He also plays tuba, euph and trombone in the LGB&D so hopefully that will keep this thread at least in touch with tubas.

On the Olds I use either a Schilke 42B or 43A depending on my mood. Both good mouthpieces for playing up high.

I play a Schilke 51D for both trombone and euph. It is not too small and it seems to make me sound good. Sometimes I play on my Giardinelli SYM-T but it has a bit too brilliant a tone with me behind it. Other than that, I got nothin'
